THE UMBRELLA CORPORATION
Comprised of several subsidiary and affiliate companies, the Umbrella Corporation is the world's largest provider of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, followed by WilPharma and TriCell, Inc. respectively. Though it's public appearance is fronted by pharmaceuticals, consumer goods, cosmetics, and other household products, it's success is widely dependent on the development and sale of biological and chemical weapons on the black market to any company or nation in the world that can afford them.
They used the original Progenitor virus to create the first B.O.W.s and monopolize the military industry, further weaponizing the T-Virus through covertly conducted illegal and inhuman research and development with the goal of creating increasingly effective virus strains and B.O.W. models. These experiments proved many failures. Despite many biohazard outbreaks over the years, it wouldn't be until the incidents at the facility in the Arklay Mountains, just outside of Raccoon City, that they became more and more difficult to cover up, especially with the added trouble of the Raccoon City Police Department's S.T.A.R.S. team.
Currently, operations are based out of the Raccoon City facility, located miles underground where they are able to not only watch the outbreak originating from the Arklay facility, but develop and test new strains of the viruses.
WILPHARMA
The WilPharma Corporation was the world's second largest phamaceutical company just behind the Umbrella Corporation. With operations overseen by a former Umbrella scientist, WilPharma has found itself in developemnt of a T-Virus vaccine using knowledge not only garnered from his own experience with the corporation, but any virus samples they can purchase or find from within the quarantine of Raccoon City, corporate spies and leaks within the organization, and black market purchases of their wares that have been found on the markets even with the start of the outbreak.
In trials, the vaccined proved successful which earned WilPharma the trust of the government which funded completion of a vaccine, turning a blind eye to the experimentations meant to speed up the development of the vaccine. They kept their clinical trials overseas, where work was cheaper and skilled labor plentiful, from the eyes of the public and, currently, are attempting to keep the growth of third-rank competitor TriCell, Inc. from disrupting their developments while maintaining funding and stock prices among growing concerns from the government about such biological developments, citing Raccoon City as an example.
TRICELL, INC.
TriCell, Inc. is a conglomterate composted of three main divisions -- seaborne shipping, resource development and pharmaceuticals -- initially known at Travis Trading Enterprises. Over the years, it branched into mining operations and discovered many rare metal dig mines, oil fields and natural gas fields, leading to their exploitation and vast profits. They further moved into pharmaceuticals with a primary foothold in Africa, actively collecting animals, plants and insects, utilizing information found in the Natural History Conspectus, written and published by the youngest of seven brothers in the Travis family during the 19th century. When all branches were self-supporting and able to expand, they were split into separate companies under a single parent company, becoming a global company.
With the collapse of the Umbrella Comporation, TriCell was provided with B.O.W. developemnt technology and viruses by way of Albert Wesker whom encouraged them to be used for further B.O.W. product development. TriCell was eventually able to boast the top share of the biological weapon market, selling such to the black market to boost profits as well as fund research on a new marine virus as well as set their sights on competing company WilPharma.
BIOTERRORISM SECRUITY ASSESSMENT ALLIANCE (B.S.A.A.)
The B.S.A.A. (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance) is a public multinational anti-bioterrorism organization formed after founding members Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield escaped the Umbrella Corporation's Arklay facility after a biohazard outbreak. Initially, the B.S.A.A. was set to specialize in countermeasure strategies for dealing with biological disasters, using the Raccoon City outbreak as a test ground, and agents of the organization could only act as observers and instructors to military and police units around the world.
However, with intel suggesting the bioterrorism threat went much deeper than the Umbrella Corporation, a new course of action was developed, forcing the B.S.A.A. to create a team that would react instantly to threats instead of sitting on the sidelines as advisors. Still in it's infancy as of the outbreak, what agents available are keeping watchful eyes on not only Raccoon City, but WilPharma, TriCell, and all their known associates, anticipating further trouble.
TERRASAVE
TerraSave is a non-profit NGO whose mission is to come to the aid of victims of bioterrorism or medication-related health disasters, formed upon the uprise of the Umbrella Corporation and strengthened in the number of biohazard outbreaks since the inception of their viral research.
As grassroots as they were during the start, often through demonstration or on the home page of it's website, TerraSave has since used more aggressive tactics to find out more information on the second-leading pharmaceutical company in the world, WilPharma, discoving information about illegal clinical trials overseas, even going so far to post pictures of their victims on their website.
SPECIAL TACTICS AND RESCUE SERVICE (S.T.A.R.S.)
S.T.A.R.S. is a privately funded elite special operations unit of the Raccoon City Police Department, comprised primarily of military, police and civilian specialists in a several fields. They took charge of strategy and rescue for high-grade crime and high-risk operations outside the capacities of normal, uniformed police, such as urban terrorism, organized crime and emergencies, and was sponsored heavily by the Umbrella Corporation.
It wouldn't be until the Arklay Incident that they met their first taste of high-scale terrorism, operating primarily in the capacity of kidnappings, bank robberies and siege cases by drug addicted patients before then. Bravo Team was the first to be mobilized to the mountains to investigate, yet were eventually lost due to suspicious circumstances. Alpha Team followed, crash landing in Racoon Forest and making their way to the Spencer Mansion where they uncovered the biological experiments done by the Umbrella Corporation using the T-Virus in the Arklay Laboratories.
In the "Mansion Incident," only five officers survived. The injured were sent to the R.P.D. Infirmary and Raccoon General Hospital before returning to active duty with many other positions filled by further recruitment by the R.P.D. Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield, however, left the S.T.A.R.S. to form B.S.A.A. in response to the growing concern of bioterrorism.
QUICK REFERENCE
While much of this information is true to the canon story line of Resident Evil, some details (particularly to do with timeline) have been changed to fit the premise of ~plagas, running concurrently with the outbreak in Raccoon City rather than in reaction to it. Here is a breakdown of the changes made --
• WilPharma is, concurrently, developing a vaccine in anticipation of an outbreak rather than responding to the destruction of Raccoon City. However, their funding is limited despite government backing, especially among heightening concerns about the pharmaceutical-basis of the troubles in Raccoon City.
• TriCell, Inc. is using samples of the T-Virus and T-Veronica Virus to develop their own B.O.W.s, growing in financial and market strength as Umbrella collapses. Though they have yet to merge with WilPharma, they are heading in that direction.
• The B.S.A.A. was formed after the Arklay Mansion Incident rather than after the destruction of Raccoon City, and are using the eventual outbreak in Raccoon City to test the newly implemented instant reaction teams.
• TerraSave, while still fairly grassroots, have started to dig up information on WilPharma's experiments, posting their findings on their website, and fueling the concerns about their pharmaceutical developments in light of the happenings in Raccoon City.
• The S.T.A.R.S. are still operational, however without members Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield.
• Though the Progenitor Virus and T-Virus are the first harnessed by the Umbrella Corporation, other viruses are being researched simulaneously, including the G-Virus, T-Veronica, and Uroboros. Further viruses will be developed as the game progresses.
